Prior to your assignment as a permanent teacher, your teacher’s degree needs to be fully recognised. Please refer to the following paragraphs for the procedures.

Get your university degree recognised in Austria!

For you to work as a teacher in Austria with a standard contract, your teaching qualifications must be recognised. There are different procedures depending on where you come from and in which type of school you want to teach. 

Do you come from the EU, an EEA country or Switzerland?

If you would like to work at a vocational middle school or higher school (BMHS) or a public secondary school (AHS), you have to go through the diploma recognition process of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). Suppose you would like to work at a compulsory school, i.e. elementary school (VS), middle school (MS) or polytechnic school (PTS). In that case, you must contact the Vorarlberg Education Directorate for the recognition procedure. Necessary: The recognition procedure can only be triggered by applying to a compulsory school. You can also download vacancies in compulsory schools HERE.

Are you from a third country?
Suppose you would like to work at a vocational middle or higher school (BMHS), general higher school (AHS) or at a compulsory school, i.e. elementary school (VS) or middle school (MS). In that case, you must apply to the nostrification of your teaching degree at an Austrian public University or a university college of teacher education.

General information: Proof of German language skills at level C1 is required for full recognition procedures. Yet, the recognition procedure for your teaching degree is not a prerequisite to being able to work as a teacher in Austria. Employment on a special contract with financial deductions is possible. This would also be the case if you still need to gain sufficient knowledge of German.
